Expensive gyms. Pricey meals. Wallet-emptying personal trainers and nutritionists. These are some of the things that come to mind when starting a weight loss journey. But getting in shape doesn’t mean you have to shell out extra cash. Here are 5 tips to shrink your waist size, not your bank account.
1. Workout at Home
You don’t have to invest in a trainer or gym membership to get fit. Set up a personal home gym—use water bottle for weights, do pushups, pull-ups, crunches, squats and lunges for strength training. Run up and down your stairs. Get outside and walk, bike, run, or swim. Here are 8 affordable home workout ideas to get you going.
2. Buy Used Equipment
Do not shell out hundreds or thousands of dollars for new exercise equipment—buy used! Lots of people donate or sell their equipment when they de-clutter. Check out your local thrift store, browse Craigslist, or go yard sale-ing to score some used fitness items that are affordable too.
3. Enjoy Home Cooking
How often do you eat at restaurants and fast food places? Cut this out of your routine, and you will not only save some cash, but also calories. The portion sizes at restaurants are much larger than the normal home cooked meal, and they are often packed with fat and calories. Restaurants aren’t concerned with your diet; they want their food to taste good.
4. Choose Foods Big on Nutrition, Small on Price
It’s a common misconception that all healthy food is expensive. Not true! There are lots of healthy foods that are only $2 or less, but packed with nutritional value. Add brown rice, canned tuna, whole wheat pasta, canned beans, eggs, bananas, oatmeal, non-fat plain yogurt, frozen veggies, and nuts to your shopping list.
5. Join a Free Weight Loss Community
Did you know you can get nutrition, exercise, and weight loss support online all for free? Everyday Health has a free weight loss community with all kinds of support groups to fit your needs. You can find a group based on how many pounds you want to lose, find a weight loss challenge, a diet buddy, or even someone in your own city. Check out the full groups list here.
Good luck—you’re on your way to being thinner and richer!
