Bet It Still Works Today!

My mother was an excellent seamstress, and during and after WW2, she used to go to garage sales in the expensive areas of San Francisco to buy good used clothing. She then brought the items home and used the material for making my clothes. I was the best-dressed little girl in grade school, but I was dressed for pennies.

Affordable Greeting Cards

My daughter loves to paint. I used to always have my daughter paint on scrap paper. Now I buy more expensive water color paper or cardstock for her to paint on. When she's finished, I fold the paper and use it as a greeting card. The recipient always enjoys the hand-painted card, and I don't have a million paintings around my house.

The Christmas Calendar

One year, my husband and I were searching for a nice present for our children, but we had very little money. I came up with an idea that went over well. I went to a dollar store and bought a child-oriented calendar for each one of them. One day each month, I wrote something special down. Some examples included favorite meal night, bake your favorite cookies with mom day, and movie of your choice (at the $1 movie theater of course!). Each child had a different day of the month. It made it very special to them. They anticipated the day all month. In December, to end the year, we allowed them each to pick an extremely small Christmas tree ($5 at a local tree farm) to put in their rooms. They absolutely loved it. That was the most we paid for any of the monthly gifts. It made Christmas last all year, it was extremely inexpensive, the kids loved having their special days, and most importantly, we did not lose sight of the most important things about Christmas.

Tricky Thermostat

The thermostat for our main level is next to our laundry room. The laundry room has a double-hung window that tends to let cold air in. I sometimes find the heater going full-blast even though the rest of the house is warm and realized that the thermostat is reading the temperature from the chillier end of the house. My solution was to seal up the window with heavy-duty plastic and keep the door to that room closed. Now, we don't overheat the rest of the house.

Festive Nails

If you want your nails to look festive for the holidays, but don't want to change your nail polish every time to match your outfit, and aren't quite ready for bright red or green polish or tiny little Santas painted on your nails, try a metallic.

Choose either gold or silver polish, depending on the jewelry you tend to wear, and wear it throughout the season. It's fun, shiny and glammed-up, but elegant and not overdone. It basically acts as a neutral that goes with anything and isn't too much for daily wear. It's versatile, too, as you can layer it over another color for different looks.

Frugal Tree Decorations

An inexpensive and beautiful way to decorate a Christmas tree on a budget is to buy a bag of bows. You can find large packages that include bows of all colors and sizes. No hooks are needed. The bows can be nestled in the branches because they are so lightweight. The metallic and iridescent ones reflect holiday lights the best.

Years ago, we did this as college students on a budget, and as we had more money to buy ornaments, we reused the bows on gifts. It's amazing how pretty, sparkly, and colorful a bow-covered tree can be.

Need a Bike?

I don't drive. For the past several years, my mode of transportation has been by bicycle. My bike was stolen. I kept checking the police station and would be shown a shed where they kept all recovered bikes.

I finally asked them what they did with the bikes that weren't reclaimed. They told me they have a police auction twice a year and sell them there. I went to the next auction and bought a bike for $65. My kids were surprised as they said my bike was like a brand new bike and would sell for around $400.

I whiz through traffic jams, never suffer from road rage, and get my daily exercise. I can get to pretty much anywhere I want to go.

Knitted and Crocheted Items

For those of us who never learned to knit or crochet, afghans and other items cost a fortune. Even the yarn is costly, according to friends who are involved in this hobby. But, I recently got a perfectly fantastic afghan lap throw for $2.50. It was at a thrift store! Many such stores sell these for well under $5 or $10, a fraction of what you're charged elsewhere.

I found out you can wash afghans and knitted and crocheted items, and they'll be as good as new. Instructions on how to do this are on the web. My friend who knits said that she uses double the amount of fabric softener (the real stuff, not vinegar) and pulls the item back out to its normal size before it dries. So instead of paying $50, $75, $100 or more for a knitted or crocheted throw, try thrift stores and garage sales. This is just one more example of how it pays to buy secondhand!

Easier Silver Polishing

I picked up an interesting tip for polishing silver on a radio program. When I finally got up the nerve to try it, it worked great! Best of all, I learned that silver polish actually removes the oxidized silver from the item, leaving less silver on it. This method actually reverses the tarnishing process without removing anything.

Line a small pan with aluminum foil and then fill it with water. Bring the water to a boil, add a couple teaspoons of baking soda, and then turn off the heat. Dip your jewelry and silverware items in it for a minute and they will come out shining like new!

This method works for larger items too, but you will have to use fresh aluminum foil and add more baking soda for each item. You are using the electrons from the foil to reverse the tarnish.

Merry Christmas! What Child is This (Andrea Bocelli & Mary J. Blige)

Wishing you and yours a very Merry Christmas!

Sunday Scripture 12/25/11 Birth of Christ

cross image

Luke 2: 1-20

Christ Born of Mary

1 And it came to pass in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. 2 This census first took place while Quirinius was governing Syria. 3 So all went to be registered, everyone to his own city.
4 Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, 5 to be registered with Mary, his betrothed wife, who was with child. 6 So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered. 7 And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.
Glory in the Highest

8 Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And behold,an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. 10 Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. 11 For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.”
13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying:
14 “ Glory to God in the highest,
And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”
15 So it was, when the angels had gone away from them into heaven, that the shepherds said to one another, “Let us now go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us.” 16 And they came with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the Babe lying in a manger. 17 Now when they had seen Him, they made widely known the saying which was told them concerning this Child. 18 And all those who heard it marveled at those things which were told them by the shepherds. 19 But Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart. 20 Then the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told them.

Frugal Living & Money Saving Tips #33

Looking for some new  ways to save money? Check out the following tips below, compliments of The Dollar Stretcher.

Want to live better on the money you already make? Visit to find hundreds of articles to help you stretch your day and your dollar! Copyright 2011 Dollar Stretcher, Inc.

Just a Spoonful

When a recipe calls for only one tablespoon of tomato paste, I spoon the remainder of the can into one tablespoon portions, wrap each in plastic wrap, and freeze the portions in one sandwich bag. There is no waste, and it's already measured!

Easy Microwave Cleaning

You know how you're supposed to put your wet sponge or scrubber into the microwave for one minute to sterilize it? The moisture in the sponge goes onto the walls, ceiling, and floor of the microwave. If you make it a habit to sponge them off at this time, you can get two chores out of the way at once. Then just another minute will re-sterilize it.
Judith T.

Leftover Veggies?

I reuse all my leftover vegetables and side dishes to make patties for veggie burgers. I mash up the leftovers, add bread crumbs, shape the patties, and shallow fry them. I freeze extras for my kids' school lunches.

What's In Your Wallet?

When we go on vacation, my husband carries just his MasterCard. I leave my MasterCard at home. I carry my Visa. He leaves his Visa at home. That way, if one of us loses a wallet and we have to report the credit cards missing, we're not stuck in a strange city with both of our cards blocked and no way to buy food or gas or pay for hotels.

Frugal Advice

An older coworker and I were trading notes and tips on the frugal lifestyle. She told me that she used to date a banker. Referring to finances, he said to her, "It is easier to stay out of trouble than to get out of trouble." That saying made me stop, think, and reflect, and I realized that this is a saying that I should take to heart. My coworker explained that this saying has remained with her and she has attempted to be very frugal and responsible with her money. She has shunned debt, including credit card and car payments.

Best Way to Freeze Meats

We have been freezing our meat and poultry supplies for years. Although we've tried a lot of different methods, our favorite (for both ease of use and good results) is wrapping the meat in plastic wrap and then in foil. These packets are then stored in gallon-size freezer bags. If you'd rather not use foil, freezer wrap works well. However, I've found it much harder to work with.

Easy Acne Solution

I have an acne remedy that my teenagers use, and it works great. They use it every other day or so to prevent dryness. It's called a PanOxyl® bar and it comes in 5% and 10% strength.

When you go to the pharmacist, just ask them. They sell it behind the counter without a prescription. The cost isn't bad compared to the prices of the shelf brands.
Candee O.

Make Your Own Gift Bags

After years of frustration with gift wrap, tissue paper, ribbons, gift bags, etc., I found an alternative! I purchased some inexpensive yardage of Christmas theme fabrics. My granddaughter and I cut and sewed draw-string bags of different sizes. By putting a simple casing at the top of the bags, we were able to run through some pretty satin ribbons to tie the bags up with.

There is no more mess to clean up either. We simply take the bags and fold them neatly and put them away for the next year. We're also making gift bags for birthdays and other occasions. We even made a couple of small bags from scraps of ultra-suede for special gifts. These bags will last us for years.
Betsy H. in Plano, Texas

Can't Afford a Christmas Tree?

Did you know you can make your own fake Christmas tree? If you have pine trees in your area, collect the branches that drop on the ground and let them dry. You will need a lot, about thirty of differing lengths. Trim the needles to about four inches and paint the branches with spray paint of a color you choose (be sure the branches are dried out).

Place a beam or pole of wood (get this free by looking around for waste lumber or by stripping a sapling) into a bucket of clay or plaster. Use old coat hanger wire and hobnails to create a loose spiral frame of wire around the beam. Insert the branches into the frame with long branches lower and short branches higher. Sculpt your tree. Make it very full. Use spray paint to color any unpainted spots. Then decorate. They last many years if you treat them well.

Consignment Shop Secret

Buying from charitable consignment shops can save money. However, this has become common knowledge, making a trip to the Goodwill or Salvation Army store a crowded and less fruitful expedition.

However, many charities also run consignment shops that are less known and thus less traveled. Some of my best deals have come from a store for The ARC (a charity for those with intellectual disabilities), a consignment shop supporting a local homeless shelter and outreach (everyone else went to Goodwill), and Disabled American Veteran Bargain Center.

Do a search for thrift store, thrift shop, or bargain center to find the lesser-known sources for a deal and help the charities no one else is helping.
