Frugal Garden Markers

To make cheap but long lasting garden markers, I cut some old Venetian blinds to about a foot long and put a point on one end. You can even write on them the type of seed you have planted. I have used mine for about four years, and they are still in great shape.
Mike F. in Elmira, NY

Less Expensive T-Shirts

The next time you're shopping for t-shirts for yourself and/or your family, a cheap source you might not have considered is your local craft store. They carry standard, basic t-shirts in various solid colors that they sell for the purpose of decorating with paints, etc. The prices are pretty impossible to beat, especially when they go on sale. Other plain, functional items they sell cheap are flip-flops, foam visors, and canvas aprons and tote bags. Whether you choose to embellish them or not, these staples are priced right.
Diva

Natural Hair Care

The best homemade beauty tip that is equivalent to any expensive hair treatment is to use warmed olive oil on your hair to repair, smooth, and hydrate. Just warm the oil, massage it into your hair, and leave on half an hour before washing as normal. Makes your hair luxurious and smooth.
E.

Handy Magnifiers

I buy very strong reading glasses at a discount store or find them at yard sales. They're great for removing splinters without having to try to hold a magnifying glass in one hand and a needle in the other. They also make small craft projects and close work much easier.
BB

Patios and Walkways

Something my sister did to make her own patio might also work for a walkway. She collected broken pieces of cement from someone who was ripping it up. Then she broke it into manageable pieces and various shapes and made a beautiful patio by arranging the pieces like you would do with flagstone or other material and filled the cracks with small stones and pebbles from a nearby river bed. It looks great and only cost her time.

Better Off Late

Here's a tip we discovered accidentally. We happened to have free tickets to a local minor league baseball game, so we decided to attend even though we would be late. We arrived at the ballgame during the fifth inning, and to our surprise, we did not have to pay for parking. And no one was there to collect our tickets! I inquired with the team office the next day and found out that parking and admission to the game is always free at the bottom of the fifth inning. My kids were thrilled when they found out we could attend all the home baseball games as long as we came late!

Imagine all of those times we have said, "Hurry up. We don't want to be late." Well, going to the baseball game is now one time we can be glad we're late!

Car Insurance Tips

Many insurance companies offer a discount for "mature drivers" (generally over 55) who take a driver improvement course. Check with your insurance agent.

My car insurance company started a new program offering a discount for policy holders who sign up to report their mileage twice a year. I got an immediate reduction in my premium for signing up, and depending on my annual mileage (namely if it stays low), a larger discount will follow. Again, check with your insurance agent.
Joe

Search and Sell!

In order to make some much needed school money, I had my kids go through their closets and give me every piece of clothing, toys, electronics, books, and sports equipment that they had outgrown. I searched the online sites to determine what they would be worth. I went through our office and my husband searched his hunting and fishing equipment and tools. I decided that anything worth more than $10 would go online and the rest would go into a garage sale.

We have sold more than $800 online. The garage sale with nothing over $5 raised $300. The closets are more organized, and I made the kids promise to tithe a percentage. All the unsold items have been donated to charity. Each kid will get money to spend on school activities (sports, yearbooks, and clothes), and they have said that they want to take good care of the new items they bought since they may be able to resell them.

Daily Exercise at Home

There are many things around the house that make good exercise equipment. The easiest are right in your pantry! Use one- or two-pound cans as weights until they become too easy to lift. You'll know they're too easy when you can do 15 reps without a problem. Use your staircase as a stair stepper and for other exercises to build up leg muscles. Put a large towel on the floor to use as a mat for floor exercises.

To build exercise into your daily routine, forget about being efficient. Be effective instead! Park your car at the far end of parking lots. You won't miss the extra two or three minutes you use to get to the door of the store, but you'll see the difference in no time. Go up and down the stairs at home frequently. Wash your own car, clean your own house, till your own garden, and shovel your own walks and driveway.

All of these activities and many others around the house qualify as exercise. They really make a difference. I've lost and kept off over 85 pounds, going from size 16-18 to size 4, doing all these things. I also walk around the neighborhood and to nearby stores. I even walk to some of the schools where I substitute teach.

Cheap Date Night Ideas

Looking for a way to have a great date night with you significant other, without breaking the bank? Redbook recently  compiled a list of some really cheap or free date night ideas.

Some ideas include:
  • Take in a matinee as opposed to an evening movie or theater production.
  • Create an at home spa. Draw a bubble bath, light some candles, turn on soft music (Michael Buble, perhaps??). Open a bottle of wine (or wine coolers, maybe). Take turns giving foot massages. Save money and get reconnected at the same time.
  • Take a leisurely stroll around your neighborhood or park walking arm and arm. Share moments about your day.
  • Check out area for festivals or fairs. Renaissance fairs are popular right now. Find a local event that the two of you can enjoy. They usually cost very little if nothing at all.
  • Visit a museum nearby. Take in some of the local culture and history.
  • Start your own little book club. Find a book the two of you can read (either together or independently) then discuss it.
  • Make it a double date at home. Invite another couple or two over and play board games, listen to music (and dance) share some refreshments or even a light dinner.

The idea is to be creative, have fun and you don’t have to spend a bundle to have a great date with your special someone.

Do you have any cheap date night ideas to share?

Fake Reviews? How to Spot Them.

Have you ever investigated a product or service online by 104965ds4zgzvag computer shop keyboardchecking out the reviews? I think most of us have at one time or another. But did you know that some of those reviews may not be legit? Some companies PAY people to write positive reviews about their product or service, so be on the look out.

How can you spot a FAKE review?
Money Talks News has listed some helpful tips from the horse’s mouth so to speak. You can get the inside scoop from someone who used to get paid to write biased reviews.

Tip #1 Stay away from reviews that sound like a sales pitch.

Tip #2 Be suspicious of too many 5 star ratings.

Tip #3 Check the review date and time. If there are numerous positive reviews within a 48 hour time period that could indicate paid reviews.

To read the full article on How To Spot a Fake Product Review, check it out on Money Talks News .

Never heard of Cozi? It is a place where you can organize your family's entire schedules, remind them of appointments or soccer games. Create shopping lists and have them text messaged or emailed to you. Easily see what the upcoming day has in store. You can even use it as a family journal. Lots of great features. Protecting Peeled Apples

When peeling apples for canning, drop your peeled apples in cool water with a little salt added. It keeps your apples and applesauce white.
Jolynn H.

Controlling Fleas

When I buy flea collars for my three dogs, I use the extra that I cut off to put in my vacuum cleaner bag to kill any fleas that are sucked up! It helps to keep the house flea free.
Allison in Elmendorf, TX

Summer Teas

You pay a lot for those fruity delightful teas, but you can make your own that's even better by freezing crushed fruits in ice trays. I place fruit in blender with some water and then pour it into ice trays to freeze. When I want to serve fruity teas or even water, I just take out several squares of the frozen mixture and place them into a glass or pitcher. It's so yummy, all-natural, and very refreshing on these sultry hot days.
S.

Using Leftovers

Leftovers are great only if you eat them. In the past, I often forgot what I put in my fridge, especially if I put it away in a container that was not see-through. Recently, I came up with the idea of writing the contents on the side of the reusable plastic container with a dry erase marker. That way, I know what is in there, and the writing comes off in the dishwasher.
Dawn G. in South Bend, IN

Above Ground Pool Repairs

My above ground pool had a large tear in the liner. The patch kits they sell for $9.99 have repair adhesive and a 3x12 piece of vinyl. We went to the Walmart® craft section and found a 54 x 1/4 yard piece of identical clear vinyl for 49 cents! And I purchased a tube of repair adhesive for $3 that will last a long time. I also like having the extra supplies close by in case it is needed quickly. If you curve the cut in the vinyl, it lays better than a square or rectangle.
S. in Rochester, NY

Caring for Dry Hair

Before you buy an expensive conditioner, you may want to focus on your hairbrush. For years, I had split ends when my hair was long. And having long hair, I would typically brush it thoroughly at least once a day with a nylon brush. Then one time when I was in a beauty supply store, I decided to buy a boar hair bristle brush. Within two weeks of using the new brush, I noticed a significant reduction in my split ends. I threw away all nylon/plastic brushes and just used that one. After a time, I had no more split ends. A boar hair bristle brush is more expensive than a nylon brush, but not by much. You can get a very good one for around $20 in a beauty supply store. Consider it an investment. I still have that same brush, and it has been over 20 years since I bought it.
Rhonda in Denver

Cleaning Mildew

Borax is one of those often forgotten cleaners our grandparents swore by. To remove mildew from upholstery and other fabrics, soak a sponge in a solution of 1/2 cup borax dissolved in 2 cups hot water and rub it into the affected areas. Let it soak in for several hours until the stain disappears and then rinse well.

To remove mildew from clothing, soak the clothing in a solution of 2 cups borax in 2 quarts (2 liters) water. Of course, modern fabrics can be a bit more fragile than our grandmother's generation, so it's a good idea to test a hidden corner first for sensitivity, but so far I haven't found any problems.
Pam M.

Free Stone Walkways

I recently made a stepping-stone path in our yard, absolutely free. First, I measured the area and estimated how many "steps" I'd need. Then, I drove around to various construction sites in our area. Wherever I'd see broken-up chunks of concrete, I'd stop and ask if I could take a few of the smaller pieces. I looked for pieces that had a flat side, and were roughly about a foot square. Within three days, I had enough chunks to start my project!

Next, I laid the chunks out in the desired path. For each one, I dug about two feet down, so that the flat top was flush with the ground. It took a little patience to get each step level, but the results are rewarding. I finished the edges of my new path off with pea gravel and sprinkled it with pretty marbles and colored stones. Now I get comments all the time on my lovely, homemade path. Similar stones cost around $2 to $3 each, so I saved about $60!
Shaunna

Shopping for Hotels

When you are looking for hotel rates, it pays to check a couple of places before making your reservations. First, do an online search for hotels in the area you'll be staying. When you find a hotel you like, check the online discount sites to read the reviews, but don't automatically book the room through those sites. Check the website of that hotel or hotel chain. They will often have better rates than the discount sites.

But don't stop there! Get the number of the hotel or chain you are interested in and call them. I've found that they are more willing to deal and have more options than those given online. One place we stayed advertised a senior discount on their chain site, but the actual hotel offered a much better senior rate when we called. Another gave us an upgrade to an ocean view room just because I asked a few questions of the owner (who happened to answer the phone). It's always better to talk to a human!

Also, it pays to stay in local hotels rather than big chains. They are often cheaper, more customer-friendly, more knowledgeable, and more willing to work with your needs. We would rather pay for a comfy, unique room with the local flavor than a cookie-cutter room and a continental breakfast any day.

Summer Vacation Photos? Turn them into FREE Photo Books!

Summer is here and that means vacation photos. What to do with all your pics? You can make a photo book, of course!

As I mentioned before, you can get 4 FREE Photo books per month from HOT PRINTS.

What is better than FREE?

image

All you need to do is:

  1. Get creative and make an awesome photo book with your high-quality photos.
  2. Give us the recipient's name and shipping address.
  3. You pay only $2.99 shipping/handling. That’s it.
  4. Sit back and enjoy a cool drink. We will do the rest

How are they able to give you FREE Photo Books?

The photo books are ad-supported. They contain a 4-page advertising insert in the middle of the photo book, which is easily removable and does not interfere with your precious photo pages.
