Home Improvements For Less: #1 Recovering Chairs

There are many expensive ways to upgrade your home, your furniture or your living space in general. Being that I am one who loves to save money, I wanted to find a way to freshen up my home for less. We have been complaining about the easily dirtied cream colored dining room chairs. We had to constantly clean them. After looking high and low, we were never able to find suitable covers.

So after doing some research on YouTube, we found a simple way to recover the chair seats for a cost of little to nothing. Please keep in mind that I have no crafty bone in my body. Yet my husband and I had little difficulty recovering our chairs. We went to our local Walmart’s fabric center and guestimated how much fabric we would need to cover 6 chairs. I asked the sales lady which fabrics are best for chair re-upholstery and she directed me to a specific selection. It cost us just under $9.00. We then reviewed and followed the video on YouTube and we were done in less than an hour.

I stopped by Rite Aid last evening and picked up some great deals. I think this is the best trip so far. (Sorry about the pic...blogging software difficulties!)

Credit Card Act: New Regulations in Effect August 22, 2010

Have you heard the news? The final provision for the New Credit Card Act went into effect as of Sunday, August 22, 2010. What does this mean for all of us?

 Here are a few highlights of the changes that are now in effect.

1.Late Fees: There will now be a cap on late fees. Can't be more than $25 or more than the minimum payment. It also eliminates the no activity fees. Some users were charged a fee for not using their credit cards.
2. Gift Cards:Money on any gift cards won't expire for 5 years and if you add or reload money on a gift card, the five year period starts all over again.
3. Interest Rates: If your credit card interest rate has gone up since January 2009, this might be of interest to you. Card issuers are now required by law to review a consumers interest rate every six months. They have to evalute if the reasons for the initial rate increase have changed for the better, (credit risk, debt to income ration, score, etc)if so they will then reduce your rate.

These new laws seem to be a good thing for consumers, but as with anything there are pros and cons. Since they will be losing revenue due to the changes, it is likely that credit card companies might drop the rewards programs and add annual fees. But we will just have to wait and see.

Martin’s Grocery Deals 8/21/10

I stopped by Martin’s today. They had an awesome deal on breakfast items. I have pictured everything except the Pancake Mix….I forgot to include it.

If you buy any of 5 participating items you get $5 off your order instantly.  Here is what I bought:

• (1) Hungry Jack Pancake Mix  2/$3

This qualified me for the $5 off. I also had a $1.00 coupon for purchase of 1 Jif and 1 Smuckers.

Breakdown for these items $8.50 - $5 - $1= $2.50

I also purchased (3) Martin’s Brand Spaghetti Sauce for $1. each.  My total for all items was a mere $5.50 plus tax. 

As with most stores, you need to have a store savings/rewards card to get the sale prices.

Another Rite Aid Trip 8/20/10

I made a trip to Rite Aid today. I had a rain check for the Nivea Men’s Body wash for $1.99 each that I had to buy before the 30 day expiration was up. The clerks at Rite Aid actually called me (3 separate times) to let me know the item was in and that they were being held behind the counter. I was surprised by that.

Before I made my trip, I gathered my coupons, sale ad and made a plan. My plan was thwarted some, as they didn’t have any more of the Purex 3-in-1 Laundry Sheets left in stock, so I had to improvise. I always try to spend over $25 before coupons, so I can utilize my $5 off of $25 Rite Aid coupon.

Here is what I bought:
