How I Saved $600 a Year on My Cable Bill...without losing services

Save money on your cable bill without dropping any of your services. How? Simply ask. Call your cable or dish provider and tell them your bill is higher than you'd like it to be. Ask if they have any promotions you might qualify for. I recently did this. My plan includes all the main non-pay cable channels and HBO, Showtime, Encore, Starz, HD channels, DVR and the service, 3 other cable outlets and remotes, pay per view options and OnDemand channels as well as medium high speed internet service. I was paying $175 per month. After a phone call and a very helpful customer service rep, I got my bill down to $125 per month. (Total bill price includes taxes and surcharges, as well.) I qualified for 2 promotions. One for the cable service and one for internet. Both promotions expire in 12 months, so I will have to call back when the promo ends and see what I can qualify for at that time. A phone call and about 20 minutes of my time and  I just saved $600 a year! That is amazing!

If you get a not-so-helpful customer service rep the first time you call or just one who has no clue, try calling back again later and speak to someone else. I had to do this myself. The first time I called, the csr said there were no promotions available to me.  Ok. I called back several hours later, spoke with someone else and magically there were promotions available. Some of the reps might be new on the job or just not know about the promos in your area.

Spring Cleaning....Is There Money to Be Made?

    As we move forward the hands of the clock this weekend, I am reminded that indeed spring is right around the corner. And that means spring cleaning is too. As much as I despise housework, I know a thorough cleaning is long over do.


    The question now is, where do I begin? What room of the house warrants my attention first? I have decided to start with the back side of the house and work my way to the front. Bedrooms first, then the living room and dining room. I usually start with living, dining room, kitchen areas first, but by the time I get to the bedrooms, I have run out of steam. Sure they get a cleaning, but not a good one.


    So, since I like my bedroom to be clean and free of  clutter (it makes for a better night's sleep) I am going to start in my bedroom first. Besides the usual dusting, vacuuming and the washing of the bedding, I must get to the closets and the dresser drawers. I have noticed that hangers tend to multiply in my closet. The first thing I do, is purge the old, ugly, undesirable hangers. (I take the wire hangers and recycle at my local dry cleaner. They are the ones who gave them to me in the first place, right?) I then try to organize the hanging clothes according to their purpose. Work shirts, weekend wear, dressy blouses or blazers . You get the picture. Basically organize everything, top and bottom of closet.


    I tend to be mindful of the things that I can't fit into, don't like or just don't wear. I stash them to the side. If the items are in decent shape I can sell them at a yard sale or a consignment shop and earn a few bucks. One man's trash is another man's treasure. I do this same process with the dresser drawers as well. Once done, I usually have a big bag of stuff to be sold or donated and a smaller bag to be trashed. I continue this process into my kids rooms. I purge not only their dressers and closets (with their help, of course) but I also encourage a purging of unused, unwanted or broken toys, books and games. Again, using bags, I sort into piles.


    Once all that is done, I feel lighter. Less stuff, less clutter and a clean room to boot! Spring cleaning can be daunting, but I always feel better when it is over. I also have a little spring (pardon my pun) in my step knowing that in a few short weeks all that stuff will be going in the yard sale and will hopefully bring in a few bucks in cash.
