What's up with the White Label?
What has happened to all the store brand (generic) items? Their new, updated look has gone backwards. Evoking not so pleasant recollections of my 1970's childhood. Reminding me of the days when my family couldn't afford the name brand items, so we had to buy the store brand. Or as we used to call them, "The White Label" brands. As a child, I didn't much care for the "fake" Oreos or other lunch snacks that were put into my lunch box. I would've much rather had the "real" Hostess Twinkees and not the not-so-great tasting white label alternative. All the cool kids had the "real" ones. But I digress.
Back to 2009. I was shopping at Walmart last week, as I do almost every week, when to my dismay, I noticed the Walmart brand products (generic) are no longer packaged in a way that resembles their name brand counter parts. The boxes and packagings are white with blue lettering (for the most part). The pictures, if they have any, are pretty pathetic looking.
Let's take the mac-n-cheese, for example. I usually buy the store brand because it is about 40% less than the name brand and it tastes is pretty good, as do most of their generic items. The picture on the old packaging, as well as the color of the box was, for lack of a better word, pleasant. This new packaging is down right unappealing. White and blue; and the picture of the mac-n-cheese would never make me pick up this product for the first time. I get that with the ecomony being dicey, yet in recovery mode, people are looking for ways to save money. Is the theory that people will buy the ugly packaging because it looks "cheaper" than the prettied up knock off version that it used to be? This might attract those consumers who never bought generic brands before and are looking to stretch their dollar, but for me, an avid generic brand purchaser, it is very unappealing. Almost makes me want to cut out more coupons and buy the store brands!
Or another theory to why the packaging has changed is that maybe the company is trying to save money on printing costs. No more multi-color. I guess that would save a few bucks on ink costs, right? Whatever the reasoning behind this change, it is still disturbing to me.
I know that what matters most is the quality of the item. But if the packaging makes me want to gag....how in the world is that going to get me to buy it? I guess because I am still a frugal shopper, I will pick up the "White Label" brands and bring them home to my family. But I won't be happy about it.
