Fire your cable or dish company?

Well, maybe. With so many TV shows and movies available online, who needs cable? With the cost of cable and dish service continually rising, many people are wondering is it really worth it?
There are a few great TV and movie websites that I recommend. Hulu.com, Fancast.com and In2TV. You can find old and new shows as well as movies and cartoons for the kids. Current episodes of your favorite series or an old classic. Another place to visit is your favorite channel’s website to find what you are looking for. For example, if you are an avid Desperate Housewives watcher, you can go directly to abc.com and watch the latest episode.
While you can’t necessarily find everything you might want to watch online…you can get pretty close. So if you want to save some money on your cable or dish cost, you might consider using your online provider to watch your favorite shows.

Mom, What's for dinner?

I have recently started to plan out our dinner meals about 2-3 weeks in advance and it has saved me time and money and aggrivation. I often would wait until I got home from work to even begin to think about what we were having for dinner. Which would leave me scrammbling to through something together. I now know ahead of time.

After I decide what I am preparing for the upcoming week(s), I go through my pantry, refrigerator and freezer. I write down what I don't have on hand that I will need for my pre-planned dinners. This is now the beginings of my grocery list.

I find it is also a good idea to look at the weekly grocery store ads. You may find inspiration for your meals based on sale items, particularly meats. Don't forget to scour your coupons and use them in conjunction with the sale items. If there is a particularly great deal on something don't be afraid to stock up on it if you have the room.

Planning ahead of time for your meals as well as your grocery shopping can help keep you organized, save you time and money. I no longer dread hearing, "Mom, what's for dinner?"

Great free downloads and sites!

I am always searching for great free websites or free downloads. I'd like to share a couple today.

The first is a software suite called OpenOffice. It is a great free word processing program and much more. It can also create spreadsheets, presentations, graphics and databases.
I have recently run into a problem while trying to open a word processing document from a program that I didn't have on my computer. After installing OpenOffice, I was able to read and edit the document without any trouble. I have used this program for over two years and am very pleased with it. I have used it for word processing and presentations mostly and it works great. If you are looking for an office suite program that is free, you can't beat OpenOffice.

The second free program I would like to share is a site called keepvid.com. You can use this site to convert video files free from YouTube or DailyMotion or other online video sites, to save on your computer or to upload to your Ipod. You find the video you want to save, highlight and copy the url and paste it into the URL browser at the top of the keepvid.com page and click download. Then it will bring up one or two options for your download preferences. Usually you can choose between an .flv file or an .mp4 file. Choose whichever works best for you. I usually choose .mp4 file as it works well with Ipod. Then you choose where to save your file to on you computer. You can then upload video to Ipod using iTunes or another media player such as RealPlayer. Both are free to download and have great features.

Maintain your vehicle to save time and money

There are several ways to keep your car in good condition and by doing so you not only save time, but money as well. One of the most important things is to make sure you have regular oil changes. It is recommended that you do so once every 3 months or every 3,000 miles whichever comes first. If you know how, you can change the oil and filter yourself. That can save you about half the cost. If that is not your cup of tea, have it done professionally. They usually tap off the washer fluid, transmission fluid and check air filter as well. Most places will be able to check and adjust the air pressure on your tires. Having your tires inflated properly makes for a smoother ride and saves gas mileage. All these things can keep your car running properly.

If your car starts to make funny noises or spits and sputters, get it checked out. The longer you wait, usually the more it will cost to fix later, as more damage may be done. Get regular tune ups. Ask your dealer what the recommendation is for tune ups for your particular vehicle.

Keep your car clean inside and out. If your car is like mine, filled with kids and their juice boxes, snacks and papers, having a once a week clean out is essential. Not only will it help to keep your car neat but it will keep unwanted odors away. Take the car to a local car wash and vacuum out any other residue. Or use your portable car vac if you have one. Depending on where you live you would probably want to wash the outside of the car once every two weeks or at least rinse off the dust and dirt. Do it at home if possible or take to the car wash. Many car washes have frequent customer cards. After so many washes you get a free one. Remember a clean car is a happy car! And a clean car makes for a happy mom (or dad)!

Make Money While Spring Cleaning.

Spring cleaning can be a way to make money! How you ask? Simple, while cleaning out your closets and under your bed, you might just find a few things or more that you really don't want or need.
Why not turn those items into CASH! Have a yard sale! As the weather warms up many people anticipate the begining of "yard sale season". Capitalize on the nice weather and clean up your house at the same time. For some great tips on how to have a successful yardsale, click here.

Get your whole family in on it. Have the kids clean out their toy boxes and gather clothing that doesn't fit anymore. Dig out old cds or dvds that no one watches. Do you have any collectibles that do nothing more than collect dust in your cabinet? If you no longer have an interest in them, sell 'em. Maybe you have an antique or two. Do a bit of research on these types of items and price accordingly. You may find you have a treasure in your attic.

Clean and de-clutter your house and make a few bucks at the same time! Hope your yard sale is successful one!

How to get books, video games, dvd, music and more for LESS!

There are a few places on the web where you can get books, video games, dvds, cds and even textbooks for LESS. The first place I would recommoned is Half.com. It is a site where people can buy or sell their new or used media of all kinds. You can often find great bargains on used books. Can also be a great way to make a few bucks for yourself if you have some old dvd's or books lying around.
Another site I like is SwapTree.com. This is actually a swapping media website. You list the items you have and the items you want. If someone has what you want you simply swap. No cost other than shipping charges. They have video games, music and books. It is a great site and a great idea!
Similarly is a site called Bookins.com. You get any book or dvd for only $4.49 shipping. Print free postage to send your item.

Budget Plan for Utilities...Gas, Electric, Water...etc.

In the last post, I neglected to mention another great tip in regards to utility bills. This won't save you any money overall, however it will make it much easier to budget your utility costs each month.
Get on a budget plan with your utility company. Generally, how this works is that your gas, electric or water company can determine the annual cost of your utility expenses based on last years usage and divide that cost into 12 equal monthly payments. So lets say you last year you spent $2200 total on electricity. Divide that into 12 equal payments and your monthly cost would be approximately $184 each month. No surprises. You won't have a higher bill in the summer when you run the AC and a lower bill in the fall. You will have equal monthly payments all year long.
Simply call your utility company and ask if this is something they offer. It can help greatly in your budget planning.
