Summer is indeed here. And with the warmer weather, comes higher cooling costs. Whether you have central air or window a/c unit or any variety of fans, the electric bill is bound to go up. But there are many simple ways we can save on our cooling costs.
1. If you have central air, get a programable thermostat. You can program the temperature in your home to be a bit higher when you are not in you home for the day. And set it to start cooling off about 30 minutes before you are scheduled to return home. This way you are not cooling an empty house, but it will feel comfortable when you walk through the door.
2. Close the air vents in unused rooms ( a few anyway). This way you wont cool rooms that no one is using. Don't however, close too many vents. As this could have a negative affect on your hvac system. If you are unsure, check with your heat and a/c service company.
3. Keep windows and doors closed while the a/c is running. You don't want to let any of the cool air escape or let any of the hot air in.
4. Close blinds or curtains. Particularly if the sun is beaming in. That will help keep unwanted heat out. Using thermal curtains have even more a benefit for both winter and summer.
5. Use the oven sparingly. Try cooking outside on the grill when possible. When the air in your home gets warm from the oven, the a/c tries to compensate. Which ultimately costs more.
6. Set your thermostat 2 degrees higher than you comfortably enjoy the room temp and utlitize ceiling fans, standing or table top fans to help cirulate the air.
7. Plant trees or shrubs around your home in places where the sun hits directly. Providing shade is a great way to help keep your home cool.
